Australian Capital Territory
Fossicking in the ACT is strictly regulated, and while a formal “license” system similar to Queensland’s doesn’t apply to the whole territory, you generally need explicit permission, particularly for ACT forests or private land, as fossicking in National Parks is prohibited. Always check for specific site restrictions and obtain necessary permits, such as for certain NSW forests, to avoid fines.
ey Considerations for the ACT:
No General Permit: Unlike NSW, there is no single, widely advertised, online “ACT fossicking permit” for public lands.
  • Restrictions: You cannot fossick in National Parks, Conservation Parks, or Reserve areas.
  • Permissions: You must obtain permission from the relevant landholder or authority.
  • Private Land: You must have written permission to enter private land.
  • Recommended Actions:
Contact ACT Parks and Conservation Service regarding designated areas.
  1. If looking to go near the border, consider a 12-month NSW state forest permit.
  2. Ensure all tools are hand-held (pans, small shovels) and that you restore any disturbed groun
